By: SMS correspondent, Michelle SpragueThe Wolverine Outlaw Midgets made a stop at the Springport Motor Speedway and these little powerhouses just flew around the big 3/8-mile asphalt oval. Aaron Kramer of Shelbyville, IN set fast time with a 14.597 and went on to win his heat and the feature. Kim Hughes, of Maybee, was able to hold off Jackson’s Dave Troyer for second, while Aaron Shroad, of Edmore, beat Marshall’s Haley Barnett to the line to take fourth. Phil Rutledge, of Troy, took his heat win.
The Super Mini-Cup Series saw a local favorite, Charlotte’s Maurice Randall, take the feature win over the father and son team of Scott and Tim Phillips, of Kalamazoo. With S. Phillips in the lead, and T. Phillips working his way up through the pack, Randall dove under S. Phillips coming out of turn four to take the lead on lap 17. T.Phillips made a run on Detroit’s Ed Welch on lap 23, to sit in third behind his son. Munith’s Dave Harrison came home in fourth, getting around Welch just before the checkered flag waved. The Phillips duo each took a heat win.
Mason’s Scott Sigman scored win number nine in the Performance Automotive NW Sportsman division. Troy’s Dennis Roys took the early lead, with Okemos’s Steve Oberst pulling alongside on lap two. Oberst took the lead over Roys as caution waved for Holt’s Jimmy Scavarda and Leslie’s Nate Moon. On the restart, it was Oberst, Roys, Charlotte’s Matt Kirchen, Sigman, and Lansing’s Jamie Feguer leading the charge to the green. Sigman reeled in Oberst and made the pass on lap seven, while Kirchen went to work on Roys for third. Scavarda worked his way up from the rear of the field to sit in third as they crossed the stripe. Sigman, Oberst, Scavarda, Kirchen, and Roys were the top five finishers, with Oberst taking the heat win.
Dan Shinberger, of Sault Ste. Marie, hauled down from the U.P. to give the Springport Motor Speedway a try, and ended up in the Corrigan Oil Winner’s Circle. Shinberger led the Pure Stock feature from wire to wire to take the win over Jonathan Smith, of Spring Arbor. Munith’s Matt Patrick came home in third, while Lansing’s Eric Wagner and Stockbridge’s Darren Wright rounded out the top five. Patrick took the heat win for the evening.
Charlotte’s Todd Metz Jr. almost had his first feature win of 2008 in the Boss Snow Equipment Pony Stocks, but his dad, Todd Metz Sr., took the lead, after caution closed up the field, setting up Edson Rowley III and Metz Sr., with the chance to take away the first spot. On the restart, Metz Sr. and Rowley went to work on Metz Jr. Rowley got into Metz Jr., allowed him to gather the car back up, with Metz Sr. taking advantage of the miscue. Metz Sr. took the lead on lap 18, and Rowley nipped Metz Jr. at the line for second. Bill McBride, of Somerset Center, came home in fourth ahead of Jackson’s George Wyers. Metz Sr. and Garry Sanfilippo, of Charlotte, took heat wins.
