By: SMS correspondent, Michelle SpragueThe show must go on was the motto on Saturday, when rain doused the Springport Motor Speedway in the morning, cleared by afternoon, revealing sunny skies for the evening’s racing program.
The Vintage Racing Club was on hand with a terrific display of race cars from yesteryear, along with a display table chock full of old photos and programs, a nostalgic look back to the “good ol’ days.” A big thank to Bob Cantine who brought the group together for a big 3-day event at both Spartan and Springport.
The Pure Stock division was first on the docket, with Dimondale’s Kyle Drake coming home the victor, making another appearance in the Corrigan Oil Winner’s Circle. He won a hard fought battle with Leslie’s Justin Lewis at the halfway point, leaving Lewis and Concord’s CJ Ewing to duke it out for second. Larry Surber Jr. of Jackson and Lansing’s Ian Schafer rounded out the top five. Pastor Randy Royston scored the win for the front-wheel drive portion of the division. Drake took home the RWD heat win, while Bryan Jenks, of Holt, won the front-wheel drive heat.
The Performance Automotive NW Sportsmen saw Mason’s Scott Sigman take home his seventh win for 2008. Okemos’ Steve Oberst had to settle for second, with Leslie’s Nate Moon, Charlotte’s Matt Kirchen and Mason’s Ian Sprague rounding out the top five. Moon tallied the heat win for the division.
The VROA paid another visit to their home track, with Toronto’s Dan Fraser holding off Cambridge, Ontario’s Samantha Jansen for the win. Mattawan’s Bob Martin held down the third position, while Byron Center’s Fred Otterbien and Don Deyman, of Jenison, came home as the top five. Cedar Spring’s Rick Nelson and Martin scored the heat wins for the evening.
The Boss Snow Equipment Pony Stocks ran a 60-lap feature that required each competitor to make a pit stop with a mandatory tire change. Just ten laps into the race, Lansing’s Misty Allen opted to be the first to pit road, while late race leader, Jackson’s Edson Rowley III opted to wait until lap 49 to pit. His strategy paid off, as his pit crew pulled off a lightening fast pit stop to keep him on the lead lap. Rowley returned to the track and headed for the checker. Charlotte’s Todd Metz Sr. and Todd Metz Jr., Eaton Rapid’s JT Leach and Lansing’s Bill McBride had stellar performances, while Charlotte’s Garry Sanfilippo, Lansing’s Misty Allen, Charlotte’s Steve Wrenn, Lansing’s Matt Vainner, and Charlotte’s Tony Sanfilippo brought their ponies home to round out the top ten behind McBride.
Please join us on July 19th, for racing sponsored by Performance Automotive NW of Jackson. Featured for the evening’s racing program are the Valvoline Instant Oil Change Modifieds, Performance Automotive NW Sportsmans, Pure Stocks, Boss Snow Equipment Pony Stocks and Mini-Cups. Saturday, July 26th is the biggest party of 2008, Racin’ and Rockin’ IV, featuring our regular racing divisions followed by a party in the pits, with the Basement Dawgs playing live music. As always, we’ll see you at the races!
