Fan and Fun Day at Springport

by Michelle Sprague

Promoter, Maurice Randall, of the Springport Motor Speedway sure knows how to do things right. In conjunction with the Old Mill Restaurant, in Eaton Rapids, the Sportsmans, Pure Stocks, and Pony Stocks, ran features that totaled 150 laps, thus the name "Old Mill 150". Other featured events were Powder Puff races, Race Car Throwing, and Cats Parts Mart Challenge. Tracy Kinch, Pure Stock, and Misty Allen, Pony Stock, and Sarah Ammerman, Sportsmans, were all Powder Puff winners. The race car throwing competition saw Ian Sprague, thrower, and Todd Metz, throwee, take the win. Race car throwing involves two cars, one in front of the other, with the front car turned off, and the rear car running. The rear car pushes the front car all the way around the track, then the rear car stops, before the start/finish line, and throws the front car to coast as far as possible. A drifting exhibition was next on the docket, with the driver ending his program by doing donuts with only the right half of his body in the car. Cat’s Parts Mart Challenge was also run, with the #6 Pure Stock taking the win.

Mike "The Hammer" Ammerman, 2007 Sportsman Champion, lived up to his title, as Ammerman started 14th, and by lap five was sitting in third, behind Ron Heeney and Rick Partanen. The trio made it three-wide, on lap nine, with Heeney backing out, giving the lead to Ammerman. Damon Place and Dan Lewis made their run to the front, sitting third and fourth by lap 11. Ammerman picked off cars, one by one, putting the back of the field a lap down. Place took away the second spot on lap 18, with Lewis moving up to third on lap 22. Chuck Ammerman moved into the fourth spot, when Partanen took a trip through the infield, on lap 29. Invader, Troy Turk rounded out the top five.

The MCR Dwarfs made their final stop at the Springport Motor Speedway before the Tommy Bowles/Bob Secord Memorial Race at the Michigan Cup, the weekend of Sept. 14-16. Mike McManman Sr. took the early lead and never looked back, leading from start to finish. Junior Gould tacked himself on to McManman's bumper, but couldn't find a way around the leader. Craig Curtis and Eric Hoffman battled for the third position from lap eight until the checker flew. The red flag, on lap 17, for a flipping Joe McManman, closed up the field, but the elder McManman was able to hold off Gould for the win. Curtis, Hoffman, and Nick Shanks came home in the top five.

The Pure Stock portion of Old Mill 150 Night saw Spencer Drake make another trip to the Engine Pro Winner's Circle, for his win over Rich Kinch, Derek Lacey, Mark Carson, and Patrick McNamara. The mandatory pit stop to change one tire was a make or break situation for many teams, with Derek Lacey's pit crew getting Lacey's tire changed, and out of the pit, in record speed. Matt Patrick (25 laps down) finished sixth, in spite of mechanical difficulties early in the race, while Chuck Ewing, Jeremy Lutz, Zach Hiser, and Doug Patrick finished in the top ten.

The Pony Stock division took their turn at a 60 lap feature that also included a mandatory pit stop, on the makeshift pit road, in the infield. Darren Bohne came home the victor, having won the inaugural running of a mandatory pit stop race. Todd Metz, Jeremy LaFontaine, Brian Beckner, and Patrick McNamara rounded out the top five. The top five all made quick pit stops, securing their positions, as other competitors made their stops late in the race. J.T. Leach, Mark Garland, Steve Wrenn, Jacob Newman, and Dennis O'Neil rounded out the top ten. Jeremy LaFontaine led through lap 14. Brian Beckner led from lap 15 to lap 24. O'Neil held the lead from lap 25 to lap 48, but was caught speeding on pit road and assessed a stop and go penalty. Bohne inherited the lead and went on to win his second 60-lapper of the season.

Please mark your calendar for the weekend of September 14-16, as SMS is proud to announce the return of the Michigan Cup, featuring nine classes of racing. Check out the website at springportmotorspeedway.com for gate times, prices, and schedule of events. Free camping is available on speedway premises. As always, we’ll see you at the races!
