Lewis to Winner's Circle at Springport

by Michelle Sprague

Dan Lewis, of Lansing, took another trip to the Engine Pro Winner's Circle for his win in the Sportsman division's 25-lap feature, after setting fast time and taking the fast car dash win. John Krygowski, of Jackson, and Kyle Kilgore, of Rives Junction, brought the field down to the green, with Kilgore jumping out to the early lead. Lewis, Bob Flotka, of Lansing, and Ian Sprague, of Mason, jumped to the outside for their drive to the front. Kilgore spun and came to a rest going into turn four, on lap two, with Lewis able to stop before getting into him. Flotka dropped to the inside, but Sprague, with no place to go, and hard on the brakes, got into Lewis. Both cars got their spots back and were able to continue, in spite of considerable damage. On the restart, Lewis charged to the front, with Nate Hinderer, of Chelsea, sitting second. Flotka got around Hinderer on lap five, leaving Dennis Rockey, of Horton, Jerry Schroll Jr., of Onondaga, Sprague, and Al Williams, of Lansing, to battle for position. Lewis put some serious daylight between himself, and Flotka in second, while Williams and Sprague reeled in Hinderer and went to work on him for the third position. Lewis continued to pull away from Flotka and the rest of the field, as Williams got around Hinderer, with Sprague in tow. Williams and Sprague duked it out for the third position, with Sprague taking the spot on lap 24. At the line, it was Lewis, Flotka, Sprague, Williams, and Hinderer. Hinderer also took a heat win for the division.

Seventeen Pure Stocks timed in for their 20-lap feature, with Jeremy Lutz sitting on top of the speed chart. At the drop of the green, cars were running four-wide going into turn one, with everyone getting through unscathed. Craig Rockey, of Horton, was shown as the early leader, with Rich Kinch, of Jackson, taking over the honors on lap two. Ian Schafer, of Lansing, was running in second, with Jon Smith, of Spring Arbor, coming up fast through the pack, to sit third. Caution on lap three closed up the field, and on the restart, Kinch and Smith pulled away, leaving Lutz to defend the third spot. Chuck Ewing, of Concord, and Spencer Drake, of Dimondale, began their march to the front, followed by Mark Carson, of Dansville. Lutz moved to the inside of Smith for second, as Kinch continued to open up a good lead. Kinch's lead was eradicated, when caution waved on lap 12. Lutz slowed on the restart, retiring to the pit, as Smith regained the second position. Drake got around Ewing and began to reel in the lead duo, but ran out of laps. At the stripe, it was Kinch, Smith, Drake, Ewing, and Josh Sattler, of Charlotte, who took the win for the FWD portion of the division. Sattler, Kinch, and Ewing made a trip to the Engine Pro Winner's Circle after winning their heats.

2007 Pony Stock champion, Dennis O'Neil, of Eaton Rapids, found himself in the Engine Pro Winner's Circle twice in post-season competition. O'Neil and Edson Rowley III, of Jackson, tallied wins for their heats, while O'Neil scored his first feature win of the season. Jeremy LaFontaine, of Gregory, took the early lead, over Bill McBride, of Lansing, when the green flag waved, signaling the start of the 20-lap feature. O'Neil dropped to the inside of LaFontaine and the pair ran side by side until O’Neil nailed the position on lap three. O'Neil proceeded to run away from the pack, while Rowley went to work, from the high side, reeling in O'Neil, by lap 10. LaFontaine had his hands full with Todd Metz, of Charlotte, with Metz taking away the third spot. Bill McBride, of Lansing, was sitting in fifth, at lap 15. At the checker, it was O'Neil, Rowley, Metz, LaFontaine, and McBride.

The Super Mini Cup Series made its way back to the SMS, with our very own promoter, Maurice Randall, piloting one of the mini-powerhouses. Chris Targert and Randall brought the field down for the start, with Targert taking the early lead. Tyler Minix jumped into the mix, after a spin on lap one brought out the caution. Minix got around Randall for second on the restart, with Minix going to the point by lap three. Jim DeBaecke was slicing his way up through the field, and took the lead on lap six. DeBaecke drove away from the field, when caution waved on lap six, with Randall able to get around Welch on the restart. Tim Phillips got around Minix on lap eight, and began reeling in DeBaecke. Dave Taylor made the pass on Welch, and went to work on Randall for fourth. Lap ten saw Welch and Taylor sitting in the top five, with Taylor steadily reeling in Phillips, in second, by lap 11. Phillips passed DeBaecke for first, on lap 16, but it was short-lived, as DeBaecke reclaimed the position on lap 19. DeBaecke would make a visit to the Engine Pro Winner's Circle, while Taylor, Welch, Minix, and Randall rounded out the top five.

Please join us for Fan and Fun Day, Sept. 8th, featuring the Old Mill 150 and "Race Car Throwing." Sixty-lap features, one each for Pony Stocks and Pure Stocks, will be run, both of which require each competitor to make a mandatory tire change, in a makeshift infield pit. These features have proved to be a favorite, both for the fans and drivers alike. The Sportsmans will run a 30-lap feature, sans pit stops. A Drifting exhibition will also be featured. Discounted admission applies for this evening only, with adults paying only $8, with kids 12 and under free! Be sure to mark your calendar for what may be one of the biggest weekends of racing that's making its return to the Springport Motor Speedway, the Michigan Cup, Sept. 14th- 16th. Please check out the Springport Motor Speedway website for more details at springportmotorspeedway.com. Information posted on the website includes driver registration, gate prices, and times, as well as camping information. As always, we hope to see you at the races!
