"Hammer-time" at Springport Motor Speedway

by Michelle Sprague

The Sportsman division, at Springport Motor Speedway, saw Mason's Mike "The Hammer" Ammerman make his third trip to the Engine Pro Winner's Circle, in that many weeks.

Ammerman and Mason's Scott Sigman started shotgun on the field. The duo charged through the field to sit first and second by lap four. Sigman was able to give Ammerman a run for his money until lap 13, when it was go-time for Ammerman.

Ammerman was able to lap most of the field, with only three cars remaining on the lead lap at the checker. The margin of victory for Ammerman over Sigman was 5.721 sec. Matt Kirchen, of Charlotte, had a solid third place run, while Okemos' Steve Oberst and Lansing's Al "Gator" Williams rounded out the top five. Ammerman won the Fast Car Dash, while Dennis Rockey, of Horton, scored the heat win.

J.L. Smith, of Spring Arbor, brought home the Fast Car Dash win for the Pure Stock division, while Wayne Parkhurst II garnered a trip to the Engine Pro Winner's Circle by virtue of his heat win.

Smith and Doug Patrick, of Grass Lake, made up the front row for the Pure Stock 15-lap feature, with Otisville's Aaron Spearling and Smith poised to strike from the middle of the starting grid. Smith took the lead, over Patrick, on lap six, with Spearling and Dimondale's Kyle Drake trying to reel him in. Drake managed to catch Smith on lap 13, took a look under Smith on lap fourteen, and beat Smith to the line, for his second last lap pass win in two nights. In the Engine Pro Winner's Circle, Drake revealed that that was only his second night driving a full-size race car. Finishing in the top five were Spearling, Russ Potter IV, of Williamston, and Lansing's Paul Schafer.

Some new faces graced the Pony Stock division, as their car count continues to climb. Lansing's Bill McBride and Charlotte's Todd Metz brought the field down for the start, with Edson Rowley III catching everyone asleep at the switch.

One of the tightest Pony Stock battles so far was between TJ Conroy (17x), Dan Gokee (55), and Randy Clingan (11).
- Bob Cantine Photo
Rowley jumped out to a huge lead over the field, as TJ Conroy, of Charlotte, and Dan Gokee, of Dimondale, began to methodically reel him in. Conroy and Gokee were running one and two by lap eight, while Pinckney's Randy Clingan sliced his way up through the field.

Clingan caught Conroy on lap 18, running side-by-side on lap nineteen, and took the win from an undefeated Conroy, breaking his winning streak. John Conroy, of Charlotte, Gokee, and Ashley Passick, of Onondaga, rounded out the top five. TJ Conroy was credited with the Fast Car Dash win, while Dennis O'Neil, of Eaton Rapids, won his heat.

The traveling series, VROA, made another stop at SMS, bringing 14 vintage mods along with them. Bob Martin, of Kalamazoo, grabbed the Fast Car Dash in his 1935 Pontiac.

Samantha Jansen (16) was a hit with the fans as she battled with Bob Martin (86) and Lou Caposey (3).
- Bob Cantine Photo
Kalamazoo's Nate Bennett and Cedar Spring's Steve Fuller each took a trip to the Engine Pro Winner's Circle for heat wins. Bob Martin wasted no time making his way to the front, during the feature, once the green flag flew.

Samantha Jansen quickly reeled in Martin and the battle was on. Lou Caposey, of Sturgis, jumped into the mix, and the trio jockeyed for position for the remaining eight laps of the feature. Caposey made his way around Jansen for second, while Martin took the win. Rounding out the top five was Jenison's Don Deyman and Rob Parker, of Sparta.

We had a special pace car at the head of the field for the police officer race.
- Bob Cantine Photo
The Community Racing Challenge benefited MADD, as local police officers raced against each other in the MADD Police Pursuit.

Scott Wriggelsworth, of E. Lansing PD, Joe Merritt, of Blackman Township PD, Pete Postma, of Jackson PD, Ryan Cressman, of Lansing PD, Bruce Yelvington, of Eaton County PD, and Paul Malewski, of Eaton Rapids PD joined in competition, with Ryan Cressman, of the LPD, and MADD, both coming home as winners.

Please join us each and every Saturday night for exciting racing action, at the family-friendly Springport Motor Speedway. May 26th will feature the Wolverine Outlaw Midgets, a Street Stock Invitational, Pony Stocks, Pure Stocks and the CRC's the "Fallen Heroes 500", with members of branches of the Armed Forces behind the wheel of Stock Cars, with proceeds from the CRC race going to the Troy Neeley Memorial Fund. Other memorials will benefit as well, as we remember those who lost their lives fighting for our country in Iraq. June 2nd brings a very special evening, as we honor the man who built Springport Motor Speedway, Russ Densmore, on "Russ Densmore Night." Maurice Randall has promised that it will be a great night of fun and nostalgia, as we step back in time to the days of "Michigan Ideal Speedway." The MCR Dwarfs, along with a full show, plus the CRC "Coaches Cup" and Autograph Night will be on tap for the evening. Check out the website at springportmotorspeedway.com for gate times, prices, and schedule info.
