Pure Stocks Multiply at Springport

by Michelle Sprague

It would appear that everyone is jumping on the Pure Stock bandwagon, as 12 Pure Stocks made their way to the 3/8-mile high banked oval, of Springport Motor Speedway, on May 5th. Russ Potter III set fast time for the front wheel drives with a 19.832, while Spencer Drake laid down a 20.131 to take the rear wheel drive fast time. Visits to the Engine Pro Winner's Circle for heat wins went to rookie drivers, CJ Ewing and Spencer Drake.

Eleven Pures lined up for their 20-lap feature, with Craig Rockey and Ian Schafer on the front row. Schafer jumped out to lead lap one, with Aaron Spearling on his tail.
Spearling got into Schafer bringing out the first caution, and saw Spearling retire to the pit. The remaining laps ran caution-free after the restart, with Russ Potter III taking charge on lap five. Wayne Parkhurst II made his way under Schafer for second and began reeling in Potter. Schafer, Russ Potter IV, and Matt Patrick all gave chase, but it was Parkhurst and Potter to battle up front. Lap seventeen saw Parkhurst take over the lead, on the backstretch, to take the RWD win. Potter III took the FWD win, with both drivers pulling into the Engine Pro Winner's Circle. Schafer, Patrick, Ewing, and Drake rounded out the top five.

Eight Pony Stocks lined up for their 20-lap feature, with heat winner, Ashley Passick, and Jacob Newman on the pole. Passick would lead the first lap after the drop of the green, with fast qualifier, TJ Conroy making his charge to the front from the last starting position. Conroy would take over the lead on lap five, with Passick still putting up quite a fight.

Robert Fletcher moved into third around Newman, as John Conroy worked his way to the front. Fletcher made his way around Passick on lap 13, bringing J. Conroy with him.
Caution on lap 16 for a spin by Passick closed up the field behind TJ Conroy, who had run away from the rest of the field. J. Conroy darted under Fletcher, on the restart, and tried to reel in his son, TJ. TJ was able to run away again and at the line, it was TJ Conroy, J. Conroy, Fletcher, Dennis O'Neil, and Passick. John and TJ entertained the fans during TJ's moment in the Engine Pro Winner's Circle.

Attrition claimed some of last weeks competitors in the Sportsman division, as only seven drivers were up to the task this week. Mike Ammerman, set fast time with a 16.660, a new track record. Martin French and Ammerman each earned a trip to the Engine Pro Winner's Circle by scoring heat wins. Jerry Schroll Jr. and Martin French brought the field down for the start of the 25-lap feature, with Dan Lewis and Ammerman slicing their way up through the middle of the pack, with Lewis shown as the lap one leader.

Ammerman was right on his bumper, and Lewis tried everything in his power to shake him. Nate Moon held down the third position, with Matt Kirchen and Dennis Rockey running fourth and fifth.
Ammerman was able to keep pace, looking high and low for a way around Lewis. Ammerman brushed the wall, eventually making the hard right into the pit on lap 20. Lewis went on to score the feature win and made his first appearance fpr the 2007 racing season in the Engine Pro Winner's Circle. Moon, Kirchen, Rockey and Schroll rounded out the top five.

The Super Mini-Cup series made a trip to the Springport Motor Speedway, bringing 13 of these little powerhouses to run wide-open around the track.
With 18 hp engines, the 1/2 scale mini-Nextel Cup cars can reach speeds of anywhere from 68-110 mph. Tyler Minix and Tim Phillips drove their cars into the Engine Pro Winner's Circle by clinching heat wins.

With fast and furious racing action, these little cars put on quite a show, with frequent lead changes on the first few laps. Curtis Knight held the lead until Tyler Minix made a pass on lap three.
Lap six saw father and son, Tim and Scott Phillips battling for first. Lapped traffic came into play when both Phillips' came up on a slower car. Tim made his move on the high side, while Scott headed for the bottom groove. Scott prevailed, as both cars managed to make the pass, three-wide, through turn four. At the line, it was Scott Phillips, Tim Phillips, Tyler Minix, John Dewey and Curtis Knight.

Please join us next Saturday, May 12th, as SMS presents the first ever Pure Stock Invitational, along with our regular divisions. It's also Kid's Night, with about a dozen bicycles being donated to some lucky young race fans.
