The Springport Motor Speedway "Race Recap" for May 6th, 2006

Race Report

Obrinske Sets the Pace on Albion Night
By: Michelle Sprague

Albion native, Walt Obrinske Jr. set fast time for the Performance Automotive NW Street Stock division at the Springport Motor Speedway. Coincidentally, it was Albion Night, and Walt set the bar high for the other 14 streets. At the drop of the green for their 25 lap feature, Randy Ewing charged into the lead from his fourth starting position, and led through lap 15. Dan Lewis, Obrinske Jr., and Tom Stone waged war on each other, allowing Ewing the opportunity to put some track between himself and the battling trio. By lap 10, Stone had made his way around Obrinske Jr. into third and went to work on Lewis on the high side. Stone slipped way high on the back stretch, and Obrinske Jr. slipped underneath him to take back third on lap 11. Obrinske Jr. and Lewis made it door handle to door handle with Obrinske Jr. filing back in behind Lewis. Lewis looked to the outside of Ewing on lap 16, while lap 17 brought Obrinske Jr., Stone, Ewing, and Sigman making it four wide coming out of turn two. Ewing got into Stone, cutting Stone?s tire. On the restart, both Ewing and Stone started there climb up through the field from the rear. By lap 18, Stone was back up to fourth, with Ewing sitting in sixth, leaving Obrinske Jr. and Sigman to run down Lewis for first. Obrinske Jr. slid high going into the turn and Sigman ducked under him for second, and set his sights on Lewis. Sigman stuck a fender under Lewis on lap 23. They got together, sending Sigman spinning. On the restart, it was drag race to the green with Lewis leading the charge, followed by Obrinske Jr., Stone, Ewing, and Chuck Goostrey. At the completion of 25 laps, it was Lewis at the line. Heat wins went to Paul Jakubik and Lewis.

The WMMQ 94.9 Classic Rock MI Modified division took their turn on the asphalt oval of SMS, with Friday night?s feature winner sitting on the pole. As the green flag flew, Bill Butler jumped out to the early lead with Ryan Caverly and Dan Loughan taking the high line almost immediately. Caution on lap three saw Loughan drive around Terry Trost on the restart and set his sights on Caverly for second. Loughan made short work of Caverly, bringing Larry Wallace along with him into third. The restart for a lap seven caution gave Loughan the advantage on the outside of Butler for first. By lap 10, it was Caverly drifting high, allowing Jon Deford to slip around him into fourth. Chris Ozanich, Perry Davenport, Leroy Ellis, and Jason Parish got into a battle for position on lap 15. Loughan began to open up some real estate between himself and Butler, while third though seventh ran nose to tail. At the line, it was Loughan with a huge margin of victory over Butler, Wallace, DeFord, and Ozanich. Dale Eglon and Dan Loughan were heat winners.

Brian Jenks and Wayne ?Daniel? Parkhurst soldiered on in the newly formed Pure Stock division. Brian Jenks swept the heat and feature, but not without incident. During the heat race, with one lap to go, Jenks spun out and Parkhurst spun as well?right into Jenks. On the restart, Jenks pulled ahead and never looked back. Good job guys!

Auto Value Bumper to Bumper Series MI Legends took to the track for the second time in two weeks. Twenty legends drew for position with Ryan Meldrum drawing the lucky number one. On the start, it was Meldrum jumping into the lead over Ben and Levi Rouster, Jerry Warden, and Billy Simmons. As Meldrum opened up a bit of a lead by lap 10, the Rouster?s went to work on each other tooth and nail. Caution on lap 15 saw Meldrum and L. Rouster break away from the pack on the restart. Lap 20 saw Meldrum open up a bit of daylight between himself and L. Rouster and Simmons getting around B. Rouster for third. At the checker, it was Meldrum, L. Rouster, Simmons, Frank Jiavani, and B. Rouster. Heat winners were Billy Simmons, Levi Rouster, and Scott Bross.

Please join us next Saturday, May 13th, for Coca Cola and Eaton Rapids Night. Eaton Rapids residents get ½ off general admission gate price with proof of residency. Featured racing for the evening will be WMMQ 94.9 Classic Rock MI Modifieds, Performance Automotive NW Street Stocks, Pure Stocks, and the MCR Dwarfs. We?ll see you at the races!
