Racing Season Comes to a Close With Fun Night at CCSSpringport, MI-It's hard to believe, but the 2004 racing season is over! Mother Nature was very vocal about her intentions throughout the season, but Saturday turned out to be absolutely perfect. The drivers in our regular classes were invited to compete in open competition and Wayne Haughton did just that. Haughton is a regular in our WIBM 1450 AM MI Modified division, and also the son-in-law of Modified driver, Dan Loughan. Saturday night, as the cars were staged in the chute to qualify, there was a hint of a wing peeking over the wall. Haughton had decided to go "topless" and add a wing. There's a lot to be said for the addition of that wing, because Haughton went out and set fast time with a 15.890. The Mod Squad also got the chance to run a 10 lap Australian Pursuit along with their 25-lap feature. It was a family affair as Loughan and Haughton made their way to the front. Mechanical problems took Loughan out of the hunt, while Haughton ran away from the field. Haughton captured his second feature win ever over Justin Kazmar, Jon Deford, Bill Engle, and Scott Spahr. Justin Kazmar won the heat race and Gilbert Little took home the Australian Pursuit win.Victory was sweet for the Performance NW Street Stock division, as Al "Gator" Williams drove to the checker in the first heat race, and first time visitor, Mark Smith won the second heat. Bubber Patrick, a rookie competitor, roared into the winner's circle by taking the 10 lap Australian Pursuit win, from the rear, on lap six. Patrick also set fast time for the division, earning him the opportunity to start shotgun on the field for the feature. Victory was within his grasp as a lap 16 caution closed up the field, as he was right on Smith's rear bumper to make a last ditch effort to get around the newcomer. Smith took the win followed by Patrick, Chuck Garrison, Dale Lewis, and Rob Patrick. The B&L Truck Cap Pony Stocks had a first time feature winner, as Mike "Putt Putt" Putnam drove to his first checkered flag of the 2004 season in the 15-lap feature. Putnam also won the 7-lap Australian Pursuit, with George Mosurek grabbing the heat win. Congratulations go out to the CCS 2004 season champions: Comcast Cablevision Super Late Model champion- Harry Foote Jr., WIBM 1450 AM MI Modified champion- Jim Butler, Performance NW Street Stock champion- Ben Hidy, and B&L Truck Cap Pony Stock champion- Kenny Clark. To all the other competitors who ran week in and week out, a huge thank-you! Without all of you, this sport would not be where it is today. A special thank-you to Poor Paul and Jim Leasure for stepping up to the plate and taking on the HUGE challenge of breathing life back into CCS, and for giving this avid race fan a chance to write about the sport she loves. Don't forget the Awards Banquet on October 30th. More information is available at www.spartanspeedway.com. We'll see you…at the banquet! |
