WOWM's Chris Hettinger Scores First Feature Win at CCS

Springport, MI-The Wolverine Outlaw Winged Midgets made their way to Calhoun County Speedway with the Auto Value Bumper to Bumper Series. Ike Beasley set fast time, as well as setting a new track record of 13.714 for the division at CCS. Beasley started sixth on the grid behind Hettinger. Adam Nuetzel led lap one with Nick Mitchell, Gary Harrell, and AJ Lane breathing down his back. Beasley began his charge to the front, while Harrell ran away to hide by lap 10. Mitchell and Beasley duked it out for a couple laps beginning on lap 15, and Beasley took over the second spot. Lap 19 brought out a red flag condition as AJ Lane ended up on his lid in turn three. Hettinger went to work on Harrell's rear bumper on lap 20, and ducked to the inside, around Harrell, for the lead on lap 24. Hettinger opened up quite a lead over Harrell, and at the stripe, it was Chris Hettinger capturing his first ever checkered flag. Harrell, Tom Fedorczyk, Beasley, and Kent McCloskey rounded out the top five. Harrell won the trophy dash, with Mitchell, and Phil Rutledge taking heat wins.

Mark Kortz, set fast time for the Super Pro Late Model Series, with a time of 15.399. Kortz started 10th in the field with first time competitor, Buddy Head, jumping out to lead lap one. Jack Landis set sail for the front and wasted no time in going to work on those ahead of his eighth starting position. Lap five had Head and Mike Carter battling for the lead followed by Logan Beckwith, Landis, and Brent Hook. Head made the turn into the pit on lap eight, which handed the lead over to Carter, with Landis challenging him for the top spot. On the restart, Landis over-powered Carter going into turn one and never looked back. Hook had made his way around Beckwith and lap 15 saw Beckwith battling back. Hook issued the challenge on Carter for second, while Kortz retired to the pit with mechanical problems from his fifth spot at lap 20. By lap 25, Landis opened up a 3 ½ second lead over Carter, while Jake Louden worked his way up into the top five from the rear of the pack, after bringing out a caution on lap nine. Lap 35 had Landis going to work on the rear of the field as he widened the margin between himself and Carter by six seconds. Louden made his way around Beckwith for fourth, and on lap 40, went to work on Hook for third. Hook and Louden battled door handle to door handle for third. Landis took the checkered flag followed by Carter, Louden, Hook, and Steve Slater, who fought his way into the top five on lap 45.

A 25-lap feature in the Legends division had Jerry Worden as the lap one leader. Worden went on to lead until lap seven, when Preston Dahl made the outside work for him, and grabbed the lead. Krissy Kilbourn worked her way up to third, behind Worden and Dahl, on lap 10. Billy Simmons had begun his march to the front from his eleventh starting position and was shown in fourth followed by Ryan Meldrum. Kilbourn made her way around Worden for second on lap 13, and went to work on Dahl's bumper. Kilbourn got a fender under Dahl coming out of turn two and they got together in turn three, sending Kilbourn to the rear on lap 18. Simmons grabbed the second spot on the restart from Meldrum, bringing Jeremy Metdepenningen along for the ride. Caution on lap 23, set up a 2-lap shootout for the win. Dahl held off Simmon's challenge to bring home the win. Meldrum, Levi Rouster, and Worden rounded out the top five.

The MCR Dwarfs also gave the track they used to call home a whirl. Junior Gould and Angela Ausmus brought the field to the green, with Gould leading lap one. Jon Wylie flew into the lead on lap two, with Chad Goff closing in for what turned out to be a great back and forth battle for first with Wylie. Goff grabbed the lead as he and Wylie came out of turn four on lap six. Eric Hoffman joined the fight on lap 10 with those three battling tooth and nail for that top spot. Hoffman moved into second on lap 15, but Wylie wasn't through yet. Wylie closed within striking distance on lap 19, when caution came out for Hoffman, and with a last lap pass, Wylie grabbed the win. Goff came home in second, followed by Gould, Ausmus, and Jeff Slayton.
