ASA Late Model Series Makes A Stop at Calhoun County SpeedwaySpringport, MI-The weather was picture perfect as the ASA Late Model Series rolled into town on Saturday, August 21. Thirty-seven ASA Late Models took a shot at making the 26-car field for the Calhoun County 100. Practice on the big 3/8-mile oval was nearly flawless, as the cars turned lap after lap in preparation for the evening's race program. All of their practice flew out the window as their feature was run at dusk and the track and air temperatures changed drastically from the conditions experienced in the heat of the day. Cautions plagued the 100-lap feature, right from the get go. Fast qualifier, Jason Setser started eighth on the grid, while Scott Baker and Scott Whetzel started one and two. Baker jumped out to lead lap one with Tony Rosebrugh in hot pursuit. Stephen Leicht began to move up through the field and was in the top five by lap five and worked his way in to second on lap 13. Leicht made the high side work for him on lap 21 as he drove around Baker for the lead. Doug True, Bob Varney, and Bobby Stremme were the top five at lap 25. Leicht and Baker could pull away from the field on restarts with the running order remaining much the same until lap 59. Stremme made his way around Varney for fourth. With Leicht and Baker checking out on the field, third through fifth ran nose to tail, pretty evenly matched. On the restart on lap 77, Leicht was involved in an incident and was penalized two positions, putting Baker in the lead with Stremme in second, followed by Leicht, True, and Robbie Johnson. Varney got around Johnson to enter the top five again while Leicht looked to the outside of Baker on lap 81. The two were side by side coming out of turn two and Leicht made the pass stick on lap 82 and went on to open up a sizeable lead over Baker. Mike Satkowiak sailed into fourth behind Stremme on lap 85 and continued his march up to third. At the stripe, it was Leicht, Baker, Satkowiak, True, and Stremme. Our own WIBM 1450 AM MI Modifieds took to the track for their 30 lap feature, with fast qualifier, Nyle Weiler, starting from the sixth position. Mike Wells and Chad Poorman made up the front row, with Poorman shown as the lap one leader. Mike Wells put the moves on Poorman to grab first on lap four. Wells ran away to hide on lap 10, with Poorman alone in second. Jim Butler, Earl Miles, and Dick Maurer ran nose to tail for third through fifth. Miles went to work on Butler, looking for a way around on lap 20, while Poorman caught Wells and was trying both the high and low side for a way to capture first. Lap 27 brought Wells mechanical problems and he made the right turn into the pit. The checkered flag showed the top five as Poorman, J. Butler, Miles, Weiler, and Maurer. The Legend Series lined up their 25-lap feature by drawing for position. On the front row, it was Frank Jiovani and Kyle Franklin. Jiovani went on to lead lap one, with Krissy Kilbourn charging her way up to second from her seventh starting position by lap four. Kilbourn took the lead in turn four on lap five, with Preston Dahl looking to get to Kilbourn to challenge for the top spot. Dahl closed on Kilbourn on lap 15, and the whole field bunched up behind them after a lap 19 caution. Kilbourn held the lead until lap 23, when Dahl made his way around her for first. She came back and issued a challenge but to no avail. At the line, it was Dahl, Kilbourn, Alex Carll, Ryan Meldrum, and Levi Rouster.
