MDA Madness Strikes Calhoun County SpeedwaySpringport, MI-An outbreak of MDA Madness struck CCS bringing with it warm temperatures and cloudless skies. The cure for the Madness? Half of all general gate admission went directly to benefit "Jerry's Kids" and fans were treated to a dose of Sunday racing action. The Auto Value Bumper to Bumper Series returned with the Legend series. Ron Semlow and Frank Jiovani brought the field to the green with Jiovani taking the lap one lead. Krissy Kilbourne made her way up from her ninth starting position to take the lead on lap four. Ryan Meldrum and Daniel Russell snuck around Kilbourne and sent her back to third on lap 11. Meldrum would go on to win followed by Russell, Billy Simmons, Kilbourne, and Beau Semlow. Heats were won by Alex Carll, Jerry Warden, and Russell. The Short Track Trucks also negotiated the 3/8-mile in Springport. Thirteen of these beauties timed in for their 30-lap feature, with Joey Shuryan setting fast time. Shuryan was buried in the pack in ninth while Jeff Walcott and Keith Woncek made up the front row. Walcott led the first lap with Woncek challenging for first on the outside. It was neck and neck for 13 laps between the two. Rod Morrison and Shuryan began their march through the field and were sitting third and fourth, after a caution for three wide racing for first that landed Walcott and Jim Froling in the infield. Morrison dashed into the lead on the restart and began to pull away from Woncek. Shuryan gained on Morrison and the pair jockeyed for first for the next nine laps. Caution closed up the field and a problem on the restart shuffled Morrison back to seventh. Shuryan brought home the victory followed by Woncek, Bob Fruit, Walcott, and Froling. Walcott and Froling were heat winners. Five newcomers to CCS tried their luck at the Open Street Stock Invitational. Visitor, Tom McGhee set fast time and started fourteenth in the fifteen-car field. Josh Steinacker led lap one while his competition tried it four wide going into turn three. Caution came out for a spin and on the restart, Mike Ammerman took over the top spot and led through lap 10. Ben Hidy made his way into first and Ammerman was hot on his trail in second with McGhee solidly in third. Caution on the speedway moved McGhee into second ahead of Landon Hidy, Rob Newman, and Dave Bollis. McGhee retired to the pit with mechanical problems on lap 25 and on lap 35, it was B. Hidy, L. Hidy, Newman, Bollis, and Lonnie York. Heat winners were York and Newman. The 4 cyl. Open Invitational saw fast qualifier, Kenny Clark, turned a lap of 71 mph. Then, Rob Miller and Paul Duffin brought the field to the green for their 25-lap feature. Coming to the stripe for lap one, the field was three wide with Duffin being scored as the leader. Clark maneuvered into first from his 10th spot on lap 2 and set sail. He had a 2 second lead over Carl Eakins, John Ward, Jason Huey, and Willie Conroy. Bryan Passick moved into the top five on lap 15 and by lap 20, only two cars remained on the lead lap. Clark's margin of victory over Eakins on lap 25 was 8.779 seconds. Bryan Passick, Russ Potter III, and Jimmy Scavarda rounded out the top five. Heat wins went to Ward and Eakins. |
