Super Pros Return to CCS in SpringportSuper Pros Return to CCS in Springport By Michelle Sprague Springport, MI-A huge crowd turned out to watch the return of the Super Pro Series to the big 3/8 mile at Calhoun County Speedway. Mark Kortz set fast time and started inside the third row. Local favorite, Rob Buckley, and Brent Hook made up the front row. Buckley went on to lead the first lap and held the lead until lap six when Jack Landis motored past on the inside. Kortz made his way into fourth and closed in, looking for a way around third place, Jake Louden, by lap 10. Lap 24 saw tight racing action between Buckley, Louden and Kortz. Louden got Buckley loose in turn two, went high to avoid Buckley and Kortz slipped into third, bringing Logan Beckwith with him. Meanwhile, Landis ran away and hid, with a half a straight advantage over second by lap 30. Kortz closed on Buckley's bumper with Beckwith in tow. Buckley sailed into the front stretch wall and Kortz tacked on to the rear of the field, moving Beckwith into second ahead of Louden, Hook, and Mike Schippers. Rick Everidge made the move around Schippers to enter the top five on lap 43, while Kortz had moved up to eighth from the rear of the field. On lap 45, Beckwith tried to duck under Landis through turn four but couldn't quite get it done and continued to work the low side of Landis coming to the stripe. Landis grabbed the victory, becoming the third different winner in three races. Beckwith, Louden, Hook, and Everidge rounded out the top five. The WIBM 1450 AM MI Modifieds started an 18-car field for feature, with fast qualifier, Justin Kazmar, starting 13th on the grid. Ken Buchner and Mike Katz brought the field to the green with Katz shown as the lap one leader. There was side-by-side racing for sixth, seventh, and eighth positions, with Jon Deford and Mike Wells in hot pursuit of Katz. Jason Parish worked his way to the front using outside groove, and sat just outside the top five by lap 10. With Wells as the leader, caution came out and on the restart, Parish sailed into third and took away the second spot on lap 15. Wells and Parish broke away from the field in a heated battle for first, followed by Wayne Haughton, Jim Butler, and Chad Poorman. Some great racing shaped up back in the pack between Deford, Earl Miles, and Katz. Caution came out for Kazmar, who had just moved into tenth, for mechanical problems on lap 23. This set up a 3-lap dash to the finish between Wells and Parish, who checked out at the drop of the green. Haughton, Butler and Poorman all wanted the third spot. The top five at lap 25 was Wells, Parish, Haughton, Butler, and Poorman. Heat winners were Troy Tucker and Jim Butler. The Legends Series also made a stop at the Calhoun County Speedway. The early leader was Ryan Meldrum, who ended up leading 22 laps of the 25-lap feature. There was close racing action after the top four broke away from the field on lap two. Meldrum, Jerry Worden, Krissy Kilbourn, and Preston Dahl battled for the top spot for 22 laps until Meldrum and Worden got together. Dahl moved into first ahead of Kilbourn who tailed Dahl every step of the way to the checker. Billy Simmons, Ben Rouster, and Roy Nicholson rounded out the top five. Worden, Dahl, and Meldrum won their heats. Fast qualifier, Ben Hidy, continued his winning ways, taking the street stock feature from his 14th starting position. At the green, Chuck Goostrey streaked to the lead while the remainder of the field tried it three wide in turn three and four. They kept it three abreast for one more circuit and then surprise, the caution waved for a tangle on the front stretch. On the restart, Pat Dent charged into first from fourth on the outside. B. Hidy took second ahead of Rich Kinch, Tim Brodd, and Landon Hidy on lap 5. Ten laps later, it was the Hidy brothers one and two followed by Brodd, Robert Loomis, and Kinch. Lap 20 was a carbon copy of lap 15 with B. Hidy coming home the victor over brother Landon, Brodd, Loomis, and Kinch. Heat wins went to Jake Huey, and Pat Dent.
