The Springport Motor Speedway
Race Recap for July 3, 2004

WEEKLY RACE SUMMARY
by Michelle Sprague

Chalk One Up For "Old School" at CCS

Springport, MI-The CARQUEST Racing Series continued with some red-hot racing in the Performance NW Street Stock division. Fast qualifier, Ben Hidy, started shotgun on the 14-car field. Ken Dollarhite and Al Williams made up the front row, and at the drop of the green it was a mad dash to the front. They stacked 'em up three and four wide coming out of two, with everyone making it through unscathed. Ron Heeney, Dane Long, Ben and Landon Hidy, and Pat Dent all split the middle and by lap one and a half, they made up first through fifth positions. Heeney was checking out on the field by lap five, leaving Long to fend off B. Hidy for second. Heeney continued his march out front by as much as 5 to 7 car lengths when caution closed the field up on his rear bumper. On the restart, he picked up where he left off and jumped out to the lead over Long, followed by B. Hidy, Dent, and L. Hidy. L. Hidy made his way around Dent on lap 15 and on lap 17 B. Hidy made the righthand turn into the pit with mechanical problems. Long issued a last lap challenge for first on Heeney but Ron "Old School" Heeney prevailed. L. Hidy, Dent, and Chris Gay rounded out the top five. Heat winners were Jacob Huey and Dane Long.

The USA Modifieds roared into town to run a 75-lap feature on the big 3/8 mile at CCS. The 28-car field had fast qualifier, Brian Nester, sitting inside the fourth row with Bud Gray III and Harold Scott making up the front row. Gray III jumped out to lead the first lap and never looked back. Lap six saw the leaders in traffic with Gray opening up a commanding lead over H. Scott, Mike Stacy, Jason Dietsch, and Rodney Scott. M. Stacy grabbed second while Nester challenged Dietsch for 4th. Dietsch and Nester continued their march through the field by slipping under H. Scott who got caught out in the middle groove. R. Scott and Scott Coe also made the pass on H. Scott on lap 20. Nester got by Dietsch, while Gray opened up a half a straight lead over M. Stacy, with Nester issuing a challenge for second by lap 30. Nester continued to work on M. Stacy for 10 more laps while Gray opened up a full straight away lead. Lap 55 had Gray with a six second lead over the ongoing battle between M. Stacy and Nester. Caution came out on lap 57, closing the field up, with five lapped cars between first and second place. Gray opened up a bit of a lead after the restart with M. Stacy and Nester still going at it for second. A spin on lap 66 sent the lapped cars to the rear allowing M. Stacy, Nester, Dietsch, and Coe to close on Gray's bumper. After the nine-lap shootout, it was Petosky, Michigan's Bud Gray III crossing the stripe with M. Stacy, Nester, Dietsch, and Coe making up the top five. Heat winners were Harold Scott, and Mark Harrison. The winner of the B-Main was Brian Lolmaugh.

Calhoun County Speedway played host to the Auto Value Bumper to Bumper Series who brought along the 410 Sprint cars to put on a super show. Lee Boss was indeed "The Bossman" as he was fast qualifier, with a time of 12.458 (just a touch over 108 mph). Boss also won the first heat, and scored his first career win in the AVSS by taking the feature as well.

Saturday, July 10th, will be the Auto Value Bumper to Bumper Series featuring the Auto Value Winged Midgets, Comcast Cablevision Super Late Models, B&L Truck Cap Pony Stocks, and the MCR Dwarfs. Racing begins at 7 P.M. Check us out at www.calhouncountyspeedway.com. As always, we'll see you at the races!
