Beautiful Weather Prevails at CCSSpringport,MI- The CARQUEST Racing Series, at Calhoun County Speedway, continued under sunny skies this past Saturday, but attrition at Spartan Speedway on Friday evening took its toll on the B&L Truck Caps Pony Stock division. Only six ponies were able to make the haul to CCS, but their feature was one of the best of the season. Fast qualifier, Kenny Clark started on the tail end of the field. Jason Huey and TJ Conroy (the victim of a rollover during the heat) made up the front row. The drop of the green had the whole pack chomping at the bit to lead the first lap. Willie Conroy led lap one and by lap five, Jimmy Scavarda had made his way from fifth to first. Lap eight had Clark making the pass under W. Conroy for second from his sixth starting position. Scavarda continued to lead with Clark, W. Conroy, Jason Huey, TJ Conroy, and Landon Hidy in tow. Scavarda was able to hold Clark off until they were coming out of turn four to the checker. Clark just beat Scavarda to the line followed by W. Conroy, Hidy, TJ Conroy, and Huey. The victory made it six out of seven features for Clark, who also scored the heat win.Nineteen Comcast Cablevision Super Lates timed in and fast qualifier, Harry Foote Jr. started on the outside of row four. After one lap of racing, Kale Asztalos was the early leader and by lap five, had widened the margin between himself and John Ledwidge who sat in second. Mark Kortz went to work on Ledwidge but couldn't find his way around him. Lap twelve had Foote Jr. looking to the outside of Jack Landis and Landis shut the door, but four laps later, Foote Jr. looked both high and low and made the pass, as Brian Huntley looked to the inside of Landis. Foote Jr. rocketed around Kortz for third on lap 20 and lap 23 showed Ledwidge reeling in the leader. On lap 27, Asztalos got loose coming out of two and Ledwidge and Foote Jr. both snuck past on the inside. Foote Jr. went to work on Ledwidge's back bumper, while back in the pack, Landis looked for a way around Asztalos. Ledwidge out ran Foote Jr. for the win and Asztalos crossed the stripe in third, followed by Landis and Kortz to round out the top five. Heat winners were Jim Davis and Ledwidge. The WIBM 1450 AM MI Modifieds gave the CCS fans a taste of what they're in store for this coming weekend when the USA Modifieds make a stop in Springport. Starting outside of row four was fast qualifier, Chad Poorman. Nyle Weiler and Jason Parish made up the front row coming down to the green flag. Weiler was the lap one leader when caution came out. Poorman made his move to the front, working himself all the way up to fifth before the yellow was shown. Weiler opened up his lead by lap five, and by lap 10, a four-car battle for second was on between Parish, Dan Loughan, Larry Wallace, and Poorman. Loughan tried Parish on the high side, while Wallace looked to the inside of Loughan. Parish slammed the door and held both drivers off. A caution on lap 15 saw Weiler's two-second lead dissolved. Wallace looked to the inside of Loughan and they ran side by side for third. Parish drifted up and he and Loughan played a little bumper tag, which allowed Wallace to slip underneath them both for the second spot. It was Weiler to the winner's circle. Wallace, Parish, Loughan, and Poorman placed second through fifth. Heat wins were scored by Jon DeFord, Brian Heeney, Parish, and Dick LaPratt. The Performance NW Street Stocks decided to try it five wide after the green. The lap one leader was Rick Bailey from his sixth place start position. The leader was spun into traffic and took a hard hit from Walt Obrinske Jr. who had no place to go. After the restart, it was Pat Dent as the new leader with Ben Hidy moving up through the field behind Landon Hidy who sat in second. Lap five had non-qualifier, Mike Ammerman, up to fifth from fourteenth. B. Hidy went to work on Dent with L. Hidy in tow on lap 10, and on the next circuit, Dent slid up the track a bit and B. Hidy dove underneath him. Ammerman made the pass on Brian Beckner for fourth on lap 13, while L. Hidy grabbed second from Dent. Bailey, after rejoining the feature by tacking on to the rear of the field back on lap one, had advanced to sixth by lap 17. The top five as they crossed the line were B. Hidy, L. Hidy, Dent, Beckner, and Bailey. The Director of Fun organized Creeper Races that paired up one driver and fan to push each other, on a creeper, through a set of cones, switch places and return to the start/finish line.
