Super Pros Visit Calhoun County SpeedwaySpringport, MI-The first Sunday program of the 2004 racing season was held Sunday, June 6th at CCS. 71 drivers came out to try their hand on the big 3/8-mile asphalt oval. First on the docket were the Super Pros (formerly the US Pro Series). Fast qualifier, Mark Kortz started fifth in the 16-car field. Logan Beckwith, and 2003 Super Late Champion of Spartan Speedway, Jack Landis sat on the front row. At the green, Landis jumped out to lead the first lap with the rest of the field filing in nose to tail. Landis was checking out on the field at lap five with Tom Prebelich diving under Beckwith for second. Beckwith retired to the pit with mechanical problems on lap six, which moved Kortz into third, followed by Lansing.s Rob Buckley, and Rick Everidge. The race for second was heating up between Prebelich and Kortz on lap 10 while Buckley ran alone in fourth. Lap 15 had lapped traffic figuring into the scheme of things as the leaders picked their way through the rear of the field. Prebelich began zeroing in on Landis in traffic, while Buckley got caught up by slower cars. Prebelich and Kortz challenged Landis for the lead and on lap 17, Prebelich got loose and sailed into the infield. Kortz took second and was on the rear bumper of Landis whose car was ill-handling, and on lap 20, Kortz looked to the inside of the leader, but Landis wasn.t going without a fight. Kortz took the lead on lap 25 followed by Landis, Buckley, Brent Hook, and Jake Louden. Kortz opened up a sizeable lead over Landis with Buckley a distant third. Louden challenged Hook for fourth on lap 30, completing the pass on lap 32. Lap 35 had Prebelich moving up from the rear of the field to eighth, while the action heated up at the front of the pack with a challenge from Louden on Buckley for third. Louden was the man on the move as he had charged to the front from his 13th starting spot. Prebelich rejoined the top five on lap 46 and at the stripe on lap 50, it was Kortz, Landis, Louden, Buckley, and Prebelich as the top five. The MCR Dwarf cars returned to CCS where the Dwarfs were regular competitors on Saturday nights back in the late 90.s. The .Fowlerville Flash., Jon Wylie, set fast time and started inside the seventh row. Joe McManman and Terry Slayden made up the front row. Craig Meyers led the first lap with Eric Hoffman uncorking a motor on lap two. The smoke screen sent Chad Goff into the turn two wall while Mike Ammerman, Roger Balcom, and Joe McManman tangled between turns one and two. On the restart, Jeff Slayton took the lead and then slapped the turn two wall on lap 6. Wylie ran and hid on the restart while Rob Roney moved up to third behind Meyers. Mike Hicks met up with the turn two wall on lap 10 after losing a wheel. On the restart, Mike McManman moved into the top five ahead of Meyers while Roney got by Wylie on lap 14. When the checker flew, it was Roney, Wylie, Craig Curtis, McManman, and Meyers rounding out the top five. Giddy up! Ten pony stocks duked it out for 15 laps as the field saw a total invert. Fast qualifier, Kenny Clark, started shotgun on the field. The drop of the green resulted in a huge charge to the front by Willie Conroy and Clark. By lap 5, Clark was up to second and was chasing down TJ Conroy for first. Mike Putnam, W. Conroy, and John Ward made up the top five. Clark grabbed the lead on lap 9 with W. Conroy to third, and Ward to fourth, while Putnam sat fifth. Ward challenged W. Conroy for third but couldn.t get it done. Kenny Clark came home the victor, with TJ Conroy second, W. Conroy third, Ward fourth, and Jimmy Scavarda fifth. A 20-car field of MI Modifieds rolled an 11-car invert with Brian Nester and Earl Miles on the front row. Nester took the early lead with Miles, Jason Parish, Bill Engle, and Larry Wallace in tow. Engle slid up the track on lap three and Wallace slipped under him for fourth. Nester and Miles continued to go at it for the lead while Dan Loughan tried the high side for seventh from his ninth starting position and got caught on the outside by a train of cars on lap 10. Parish and Wallace were battling for third while Engle cruised in fifth. Loughan finally dropped into line behind Chris Ozanich for 11th on lap 15. Lap 20 found Ozanich outside of Bob Bauer and trying to run down Dave Goostrey for eighth. The win went to Nester, followed by Miles, Parish, Wallace, and Engle. Fast qualifier, Jim Butler, finished just outside the top five, in sixth. |
