Michigan Modifieds Invade CCSSpringport, MI-The CARQUEST Racing Series continued at Calhoun County Speedway with 40 WIBM 1450 AM Michigan Modifieds showing up to vie for the win. Jason Parish, of Eaton Rapids, qualified on top with a 15.870 and started on the inside of the sixth row, with last week.s feature winner, Justin Kazmar, on the outside. An 11-car invert of the 20-car field put Chris Ozanich and Jim Butler up front. At the drop of the green, Ozanich jumped out to the early lead with Butler and Earl Miles, side by side, for second. Mike Gaier joined the top four and they broke away from the rest of the field. Stan Perry over-powered Perry Davenport for fifth on lap five. Lap 10 showed fast qualifier, Jason Parish on the move and up to tenth. By lap 15, the entire field was spread out all the way around the big 3/8 mile at CCS. Gaier went to work on Miles for third, and Perry, ever so quietly, snuck into the top five behind Davenport. With Ozanich still up front, Miles was on the receiving end of a bump and run from Gaier, which allowed both Gaier and Perry to advance behind Butler. The challenge for ninth and tenth by the Parishes, Jason and Harry, turned ugly on lap 24, when J. Parish lost an engine and H. Parish and Bob Bauer got into the fluid on the track and sent both spinning into turn one. Ozanich led all 25 laps and took the checker ahead of Butler, Gaier, Perry, and Miles.Attrition was the word of the evening in Springport, as an 18 car field of Performance NW Automotive Street Stocks saw Ben Hidy set fast time with a 17.229 that buried him deep in the field behind a 14 car invert. Al Williams and Chuck Goostrey made up the front row and at the start, a three-wide charge up the middle resulted in a four-car spin that collected Walt Obrinske Jr., Ben Hidy, Landon Hidy, and Pat Dent. A complete restart resulted in a spin that sent Mike Ammerman sailing through the infield. They say, the third time.s the charm, and it was, as Rich Kinch jumped out to the lead on lap one. Lap three had B. Hidy already shown in fifth behind Kinch, Rick Bailey, Joe Barnhart, and Bubber Patrick. Randy Squires lost an engine on lap five and Dent went hard into the turn one wall with Barnhart and Ron Heeney tangling in the same turn. B. Hidy barely avoided the skirmish but opted to take the car to the pit with mechanical problems. Lap seven had L. Hidy riding alone in fourth but closing on the lead pack. A 4-way fight for the lead saw Hidy looking to the outside of Patrick, making the pass, and going to work on the bumper of Bailey. Of the 18-car field, only seven remained on lap 13 with Hidy grabbing the top spot. The top five at lap 20 were L. Hidy, Kinch, Bailey, Mike Curtiss, and Chuck Goostrey (these gentlemen were the only five still standing at the completion of the twenty laps!). Heat winners were Ammerman and Bailey. Sixteen B&L Truck Caps Pony Stocks were in competition at Calhoun, with fast timer, Kenny Clark, getting the K-car.s problems from the week before sorted out. Clark started in the 11th spot with Brent McCort and Russ Potter III on the front row. Mike Putnam jumped out to the early lead at the start followed by Scott Sigman, Jason Huey, Jimmy Scavarda, and John Ward. Clark was up to sixth on lap two and working side by side on Ward for fifth. Clark, Scavarda, and Ward fought for second position with Clark making the pass on lap six. Clark went to work on Sigman for the lead and captured the top spot on lap 10 as the leaders ran into lapped traffic. Ward worked his way into second over Sigman, Scavarda, and Willie Conroy. The winner, with a commanding lead, was Clark. Ward came home alone in second, and a three-way battle for third put Sigman across line ahead of Conroy and Scavarda. Siman and Clark also scored heat wins. The traveling Auto Value Bumper to Bumper Series made its way to CCS bringing along its own Wolverine Outlaw Winged Midgets. The very quick, Gary Harrell, set fast time with a 13.800, an average speed of 97.826 mph. Starting on the front row was Ike Beasley and Phil Rutledge. Beasley drove away from the field at the green and had put some distance between himself and Chris Hettinger in second by lap five. Lap 10 had Beasley out in front with Hettinger, Jake Meyernick, Rutledge, and G. Harrell rounding out the top five. A three-car battle was shaping up for sixth, seventh, and eighth between Tom Fedorczyk, Rick Harrell, and A.J. Lane. Lap 14 had Beasley catching the rear of the field when a spin brought out the caution. Hettinger, who sat in second, dropped out on lap 17 with mechanical problems, making Beasley, Meyernick, Rutledge, G. Harrell, and Lane the top five. At lap 25, the top five were Beasley, Meyernick, Rutledge, G. Harrell, and Lane. The trophy dash winner was Hettinger with Beasley and Rick Harrell taking heat wins.
