Super Lates Pay Tribute to One of Their OwnSpringport, MI- The Comcast Cablevision Super Late Models lined up for their feature on Saturday night and assumed the missing man formation, leaving the pole open in memory of Charlie Ryan, Jr., who passed away early Saturday morning. Remembered for his easy smile, he always seemed to be enjoying himself, especially when he was behind the wheel of the red #24 Super Late. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Ryan family and the rest of the Leslie Gang. The CARQUEST Racing series at Calhoun County Speedway saw a 20-car field of Super Lates draw a nine-car invert that buried fast qualifier, Mark Kortz, in the middle of the pack. At the drop of the green, Brent Jack jumped out to the early lead ahead of a side by side battle between Stan Perry and Josh Carr for second. Jack Landis went to work on Carr for third, and by lap five, had captured the spot. Perry set his sights on Jack and began closing on his rear bumper by lap nine. Further back in the pack, Phil Massuch challenged Ledwidge for the fifth position as Harry Foote, Jr. had a rearview mirror full of Kortz for seventh. Massuch slipped into fourth around Ledwidge and then Carr, and on lap 17, Carr held down the fifth spot as caution came out. The restart saw a three car battle for the top spot between Jack, Perry, and Landis and by lap 20, Massuch was right on Landis. bumper to make it a foursome for first. The top four went at it tooth and nail for 17 laps and on lap 35, they came across the stripe with Brent Jack of Butler, IN taking the win, with Perry second, Landis third, Massuch fourth, and Carr rounding out the top five. Darel Woolsey, Jim Davis, Stan Perry, and Greg Taylor were the evening.s heat winners. The WIBM AM 1450 MI Modifieds started a 20-car field with Stan Perry, the fast qualifier, smack in the middle of the field. Perry pulled double duty, driving both a Super Late and a Modified. Starting on the pole were Bill Engle and Perry Davenport. The early leader was Davenport as the field decided to try it three wide with Dan Loughan on the high side. Justin Kazmar began his charge to the front from his ninth starting position and was up to fifth by lap five. Perry and Loughan were locked in a two wide battle for sixth with Perry taking over the sixth position on lap 10. Kazmar had worked his way up to third, and by lap 15, was challenging Davenport and Engle for first. Jason Parish and Perry had advanced to fourth and fifth respectively. Engle, the leader, brought out the caution on lap 19. Davenport assumed the top spot followed by Kazmar, Parish, Perry, and Jim Butler. Kazmar sailed into the lead on lap 23 and brought home the checker followed by Davenport, Parish, Perry, and Butler. Heat winners were Dave Goostrey, Tom Trudgeon, Mike Gaier, and Ken Buchner. A 14-car invert resulted in a near total invert of the 16-car field for the Performance Automotive NW Street Stocks. Ken Dollarhite and Al Williams made up the front row and on the first lap, Rick Bailey got squeezed up into the wall as they tried it three wide back in the pack. Both Ben and Landon Hidy had worked their way up into the top five after the restart with Landon taking the lead on lap three. Ron Heeney challenged Chris Gay for second, as Ben Hidy advanced to third. By lap 5, Pat Dent had worked his way up into the top five from his eleventh starting position with L. Hidy checking out on the field. Rich Kinch moved up to take the fifth spot from Gay, while Heeney and B. Hidy battled for second on Lap 14, with Hidy capturing the spot on lap 15. Bubber Patrick worked his way up to sixth from deep in the field while the leaders went to work on the tail end of the field, and on lap 20 he had grabbed the fifth position. At the checker it was Landon Hidy, followed by brother Ben, Heeney, Dent, and Patrick as the top five. Heat winners were Chris Gay and Landon Hidy. Fast qualifier, Mike Putnam, rolled a 15-car invert for the 17-car field, starting him near the rear of the field. Jeri Lynn Munn and Mike Sairls made up the front row for the B&L Truck Caps Pony Stock feature. As the green flag waved, Robert Fletcher made it three-wide on the outside from his eighth starting position. Bryan Passick II took over the lead bringing Scott Sigman with him. Fletcher continued his charge on the outside, with Jimmy Scavarda being the meat in a pony sandwich between Fletcher and TJ Conroy. Lap five had Sigman as the leader with Fletcher on the outside around Sairls for third and going to work on Passick II. Three-wide was the norm for this class as a battle ensued for third between Willie Conroy, Passick II, and Jason Huey. Putnam had charged up to sixth, with the points leader Kenny Clark (driving Bruce Joneses car) up to seventh. Fletcher and Sigman were side by side for the lead on lap 10, with Fletcher taking the position on lap 12. W. Conroy went to work on Sigman and came home in second behind Fletcher. Sigman, Huey, and Putnam rounded out the top five. Sigmun and Fletcher both scored heat wins.
