Gaier sheds Rookie label, scores MMA win at CalhounSpringport, MI- The WIBM AM 1450 MI Modifieds started a 20 car field with fast qualifier, Bud Perry (15.755), behind a nine car invert. Brian Heeney and Dick Maurer started on the front row with Heeney taking the first lap lead. A side by side battle for the lead between Heeney and Maurer on lap five gave way to other side by side battles for the top spots. Still side by side on lap 10, Maurer and Heeney continued to slug it out while Jason Parish and Larry Wallace vied for fifth. Spartan.s Rookie of the Year, Mike Gaier, took advantage of a broadsliding Dick LaPratt for third, and opened the door for Parish and Wallace to follow him through for the fourth and fifth spots. Justin Kazmar marched through the field after a lap 15 pass of Jim Butler and was going after LaPratt. Up front, Gaier made the pass on Maurer for second and was in the hunt for first. A three car battle ensued, with Heeney, Gaier, and Maurer all wanting that top spot The top three drivers battled for first place for 10 laps, and with a last lap pass, Mike Gaier, a second generation driver, took the win followed by Heeney, Maurer, Wallace, and Parish. Heat winners were Dave Goostrey, Bill Engle, and Heeney.Fourteen cars and an 11 car invert set the stage for an exciting Performance Automotive NW Street Stock feature. Fast qualifier, Ben Hidy (17.105), was buried deep in the field at the green. Chris Gay jumped out to the early lead with Brian Beckner falling back out of the top five. Rob Marten charged his way on the outside up to fifth, bringing a pair of Hidy.s with him. Marten and Rick Bailey were battling side by side on lap five, while brothers Ben and Landon Hidy duked it out for seventh. Pat Dent made a huge charge for the front up to second and was challenged by Rob Patrick for the spot. Lap 10 gave the lead to Patrick after a three wide battle for the top spot between Patrick, Gay, and Dent. Marten grabbed the lead on lap 15 with the Hidy.s in tow, and saw the trio pull away from the field. These three fought for 8 laps with Marten taking the checker over Ben and Landon Hidy. Rob Patrick and Bailey rounded out the top five. Heat wins went to Brian Beckner and Rob Patrick. The B&L Truck Caps Pony Stocks once again had a complete invert of the 13 car field putting fast qualifier, Kenny Clark, shotgun on the field for the second time in two weeks. Four wide going into turn one, on lap one, resulted in a complete restart. Bryan Passick II was the leader of lap one, with Kenny Clark blasting his way to fifth with a nine car pass on lap two. Jimmy Scavarda moved into the lead from his 11th starting position on lap four. Nate Hinderer held his own for fourth with Russ Potter III in fifth. Scavarda and Clark battled for the lead on lap six with Clark checking out on the field by lap 10. Clark opened up about a half straight advantage over the rest of the field and cruised to his second win in two weeks ahead of Scavarda, Hinderer, Passick II, and Mike Putnam. Heat wins went to Passick II and Clark. A large field of Comcast Cablevision Super Lates drew an eleven car invert and saw fast qualifier, Jack Landis (14.860) buried in the middle of the 21 car pack. Greg Taylor jumped out to the early lead at the green with Phil Massuch and Josh Carr battling side by side for fourth on lap five. Lap 10 showed Taylor still holding a commanding lead while John Ledwidge holds down second with a challenge for that spot from Massuch. Fast qualifier, Landis, was out on lap 13 with mechanical failure and the leader had caught the rear of the field. Jeff Hackworth and Harry Foote Jr. were well within striking distance of the top five. Lap 15 had Massuch working on Ledwidge.s rear bumper for second, as Foote Jr. went to work on Hackworth. Mark Kortz joins the fray behind Massuch in fourth. The leader, Taylor, was heavily into lapped traffic, as he opened up his lead on lap 25. Foote joined the top five and went to work on Kortz. Two, two car battles, made for exciting side by side racing as Ledwidge and Massuch, and Kortz and Foote Jr. continued to work on each other. Taylor took the checker followed by Ledwidge, Massuch, Kortz, and Foote Jr.Bringing home heat wins were Darel Woolsey, Jim Heeney, and Stan Perry.
