Defending CCS Track Champion in Winner.s CircleSpringport, MI- The 2004 CARQUEST Racing series season opener at Calhoun County Speedway saw the #43 of Brian Huntley, defending Comcast Cablevision Super Late champion, take the checker. Brian clinched the title of Track Champion for the 2000 racing season. An 8 car invert set Huntley up as he and Stan Perry sat on the front row. Fast qualifier, Brooklyn.s Mark Kortz, started 8th in the field. The start found Kortz dropping back to 11th, and the #34 of John Ledwidge battling Stan Perry.s #10 for 2nd. With Huntley in the lead on lap 10, Ledwidge, Jeff Hackworth, Harry Foote Jr., and Jack Landis, were all in hot pursuit. Kortz continued to work his way through traffic, up to 9th, while Huntley checked out on the field. On lap 20, Kortz went to work on John Dunivon for 8th and completed the pass on lap 26. Hackworth advanced to 2nd behind Huntley, Foote to 3rd, Landis to 4th, and Perry rounded out the top 5 with Kortz scored in 6th at lap 35. Charlie Ryan Jr. and Stan Perry each scored heat wins. The WIBM AM 1450 Michigan Modifieds showed a car count of 21 mods timing in for their CCS debut. Vermontville.s Leroy Ellis had fast time with a 15.822 and started in the middle of the pack by virtue of a 12 car invert. Lap 1 saw Dan Loughan try it three wide on the backstretch when caution came out. By lap 5, Bill Engle had worked his way up to the 1st spot followed by Jim Butler, Jason Parish, Bill Butler, and Wayne Haughton. Jim Butler made the pass on Engle while Haughton and Loughan duked it out on lap 13. The 7H of Brian Heeney got into the mix for 4th, as the caution waved on lap 16. Lap 20 had a battle shaping up between Parish and Engle. Parish made the pass and brought Heeney with him. Caution on lap 23 closed the field up with Butler and Parish set for a duel for 1st. At the checker, it was J. Butler, Parish, Heeney, Engle, and Loughan. Heat race winners were Troy Tucker and Jim Butler. Ben Hidy gave the Performance Automotive NW Street Stocks the double whammy this weekend as he was fast qualifier at both CCS and Spartan. The 13 car field saw a 10 car invert of the field. Al Williams and Brian Barden started on the pole. At the green flag, Pat Dent made it a three wide battle from his 8th starting position. Ben Hidy was up to 6th by lap 3 and on lap 7, it was three wide for the lead between Rick Bailey, Bubber Patrick, and Stan Lambert, with Hidy to 4th. Lap 10 saw Ben take the lead while Dent snookered Patrick in traffic. Non-qualifier, Rick Gokee, was on the move from the rear of the field. Lap 13 showed him just outside the top 5 behind Lambert, Bailey, Patrick, Dent, and Hidy. Hidy was running away from the field when the caution came out. Dent headed for the pit on lap 18. The attrition factor was high as only 6 cars remained for the final two laps. Ben came home the winner, followed by Patrick, Bailey, Lambert, Chris Gay, and Williams. Heat winners were Chris Gay and Rick Bailey. The B&L Truck Caps Pony Stocks had a 12 car field for their maiden voyage on the big 3/8 mile. Kenny Clark set fast time and started shotgun on the field after drawing a total invert. Jason Huey and Bryan Passick Sr. led the field to the green. The rear of the field made it three wide with Jimmy Scavarda executing a 4 car pass before turn 1. Clark moved up to 5th by lap 5. Mike Putnam was the leader at lap 10, with Clark in 2nd after a side by side battle with Scavarda. Bo Smith sat in 4th behind Scavarda, followed by Scott Sigman. A fight for the lead on the inside put Clark up front and the battle was on for second. Putnam held off Scavarda to finish 2nd, with Smith and Sigmun rounding out the top 5. Bryan Passick II and Kenny Clark were heat winners. Join us Saturday, May 15th, at 7 p.m. for our regular racing program featuring Super Lates, MI Modifieds, Street Stocks, and Pony Stocks.
